If you’ve set up a WiFi repeater and now can’t remember the password it’s broadcasting, don’t panic. This tutorial is for anyone who has a repeater (also called an extender) and needs to recover the WiFi password it uses. By the end, you’ll have the password in hand, either from the repeater’s admin panel or from a device already connected to it.
We’ll cover the most common scenarios: you have admin access to the repeater, you don’t but a device is connected, or you need to factory reset and start fresh. No special tools are required—just a web browser and a few minutes.
What You’ll Need
- Your WiFi repeater (powered on and connected to your network)
- A computer or smartphone connected to the repeater’s WiFi
- Web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.)
- Admin username and password for the repeater (often ‘admin’/’admin’ or on a sticker)
- Optional: a paperclip or pin to press the reset button
Step 1: Find the Repeater’s IP Address
To access the admin panel, you need the repeater’s IP address. Most repeaters use a default IP like 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.10.1. Check the sticker on the device or look it up in your router’s connected devices list. Alternatively, on Windows, open Command Prompt and type ‘ipconfig’ – look for the Default Gateway under your active connection; that’s often your router’s IP, and the repeater may be on the same subnet.
If you’re already connected to the repeater, you can also try accessing a common address like 192.168.10.1 or tplinkrepeater.net (for TP-Link).

Step 2: Log Into the Admin Panel
Open a web browser and enter the repeater’s IP address in the address bar. You’ll see a login page. Enter the admin username and password. Common defaults are ‘admin’ for both, or ‘admin’/’password’. If you changed it and forgot, you may need to reset the repeater (see Step 5).
Once logged in, you’ll land on the status or dashboard page.

Step 3: Navigate to Wireless Settings
Look for a menu item like ‘Wireless’, ‘WiFi’, ‘Network Settings’, or ‘Repeater Settings’. The exact name varies by brand (TP-Link, Netgear, Linksys, etc.). Under Wireless Settings, find the section that shows the SSID (network name) and the security key or password. It might be labeled ‘Pre-Shared Key’, ‘Passphrase’, or ‘Wireless Password’.
If the password is hidden behind asterisks, look for a ‘Show’ or ‘Eye’ icon to reveal it.

Step 4: Copy or Write Down the Password
Once you see the password, copy it to a safe place. You can also take a photo with your phone. Remember that changes made here could affect connectivity, so avoid modifying anything unless you’re sure.

Step 5: Recover Password from a Connected Windows PC
If you can’t access the admin panel but have a laptop that’s connected to the repeater, you can retrieve the password via Windows. Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > click on the WiFi network name > Wireless Properties > Security tab. Check ‘Show characters’ to reveal the password.
This method works for any WiFi network your computer has connected to, including repeaters. For more details, see how to find saved wifi password on laptop.

Step 6: Factory Reset the Repeater (If All Else Fails)
If you can’t log in and no device remembers the password, you can reset the repeater to factory defaults. This will erase all settings, and you’ll need to set it up again. Look for a small pinhole or button labeled ‘Reset’. Use a paperclip to press and hold it for about 10 seconds while the device is powered on. The lights will flash, and the repeater will reboot.
After reset, the default admin credentials and WiFi password (if any) are restored. You can then set a new password. This is similar to wifi password recovery without admin access when you’ve lost all credentials.

Common Pitfalls
- Forgot admin password too: If you changed the repeater’s admin login and don’t remember it, a factory reset is your only option. Make a note of new credentials after reset.
- Can’t find the IP address: If the repeater isn’t broadcasting or isn’t connected, try connecting your computer directly to the repeater via Ethernet cable, or use a network scanner app to discover the IP.
- Repeater doesn’t show the password: Some older repeaters may hide the password and not offer a ‘show’ option. In that case, try the Windows method or reset.
