If you’re a student or teacher who’s ever had to type in that long, random school WiFi password again and again—only to forget it the moment you need to connect a new device—you’re in the right place. Maybe your phone automatically joined the network but your laptop didn’t, or your friend wants to hop on but nobody remembers the credentials. This guide is for anyone stuck with a saved-but-forgotten school WiFi password. By the end, you’ll have the password in plain text, ready to share or type into any device.
We’ll cover four simple methods using devices that are already connected to the network: Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone. No special software required for most steps, and you don’t need to be a tech wizard—just follow along. Let’s get that password back.
What You’ll Need
- A computer (Windows or Mac) that is already connected to the school WiFi
- A smartphone (Android or iPhone) that has connected to the school WiFi at least once
- Optional: a USB cable for Android if you want to use ADB (not required for QR method)
- Patience—some school networks use enterprise authentication so the password alone might not be enough (we’ll mention that later)
Step 1: Recover WiFi Password on Windows
Windows stores your WiFi passwords in the Network and Sharing Center. Here’s the fastest way to get them:
- Click the Start button, type “Network and Sharing Center” and open it.
- Click on the name of your school WiFi network (next to “Connections”).
- In the Wi-Fi Status window, click “Wireless Properties”.
- Go to the “Security” tab and check the box “Show characters”.
- The password will appear in the “Network security key” field.

Alternatively, you can use a command line trick. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and type: netsh wlan show profile name="SchoolWiFiName" key=clear. Look for “Key Content” in the output. If you want more details, check out our wifi password recovery command for windows guide.
Step 2: Recover WiFi Password on Mac
Macs store WiFi passwords in the Keychain app. Here’s how to extract them:
- Open “Keychain Access” from Applications > Utilities (or search with Spotlight).
- In the top-left, make sure “System” is selected under Keychains and “Passwords” under Category.
- Find your school WiFi network in the list (it might be named with the SSID).
- Double-click the network name, then check the box “Show password”.
- Enter your Mac’s admin username and password when prompted.
- The WiFi password will be revealed in the dialog.

If you have multiple saved networks, you can also use the Terminal: security find-generic-password -wa "SchoolWiFiName". For a complete walkthrough on both operating systems, see our wifi password recovery for secured network guide.
Step 3: Recover WiFi Password on Android
On Android 10 and above, you can view the WiFi password directly via a QR code. If your school network uses a simple password (not enterprise), this works perfectly:
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.
- Tap on the school network you’re connected to (or the gear icon next to it).
- Select “Share” or “QR code” (may be labeled differently depending on manufacturer).
- Authenticate with your PIN, pattern, or fingerprint.
- A QR code will appear—the password is written below it in plain text (e.g., “Password: …”).

For older Android versions (below 10) or if the QR code doesn’t show the password, you might need root access or a third-party app. Our saved wifi password recovery tutorial covers more options for Android.
Step 4: Recover WiFi Password on iPhone or iPad
iPhones don’t natively show saved WiFi passwords in plain text, but if you have a Mac with the same iCloud account, you can use the Keychain approach above. Alternatively, if you’re on iOS 16+, you can view it via the Settings app:
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Tap the blue “i” icon next to the school network.
- Tap the “Password” field and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode.
- The password will be revealed and you can copy it.

If you’re on an older iOS version, you’ll need a Mac to pull the password from iCloud Keychain. For a detailed iPhone-specific guide, check out find saved wifi password iphone.
Common Pitfalls
- Enterprise authentication: Many school networks use WPA2-Enterprise with a username and password (like your student ID and a separate password). The methods above may only work for the network password (if it’s a PSK), not your personal login. If you see “PEAP” or “TTLS” in the security type, the stored credential is your personal login, which you can get from the IT department—not from these steps.
- Admin restrictions: School-issued computers often have admin rights locked down. The Windows command prompt or Keychain Access on Mac may refuse to show the password without an admin password. In that case, try using a personal device that has connected before.
- Android QR code not showing password: Some manufacturer customizations hide the password string below the QR code. You can still scan the QR code with another phone to connect. For older Androids, you might need to root the device or use ADB commands—but that’s beyond this guide.
